FALL/WINTER 2012-2013 FILMS
|
THURS. NOVEMBER 15
DEADFALL
Directed
by Stefan Ruzowitzky. USA, 2012, 94 min.
A quasi-Western set on the wintry Canadian border, DEADFALL is a
tense Thanksgiving like no other. Two siblings on the run after a
heist and caught in a white-out. They split up, the brother (Eric
Bana) heading for the border, while the sister (Olivia Wilde) gets
picked by a troubled boxer (Charlie Hunnam) headed home for
Thanksgiving. Featuring Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson as the
parents, Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky, whose Holocaust film
The Counterfeiters won the Academy Award for best
foreign-language film in 2008, has fashioned a suspenseful and
atmospheric thriller in which a twist of fate sets the film's
characters on a collision course, hurtling this icy thriller to a
shocking climax. Rated R for violence.

NOVEMBER 29 OFF WHITE LIES
Directed by Maya Kenig.
Israel, 2011, 86 min. Hebrew with English subtitles.
A
coming-of-age comedy that was an official selection of the 2012
Berlin Festival and multiple awards winner for Best Actor and
Screenplay in Israel, Off White Lies is the second film by
Actor-Director Maya Kenig, who also wrote the screenplay. After
years of living apart from her father, Libby, an introverted yet
sharp-witted teenager, is sent to live with him in Israel. Her
arrival coincides with the outbreak of the second Lebanon war. Libby
quickly discovers that her father is an infantile eccentric, and
that he is 'in-between apartments'. Despite being homeless himself,
he comes up with a quirky plan to put a roof over their heads,
posing as refugees from northern Israel under attack, and are taken
in by a well-off family in Jerusalem. Finally in a 'normal'
household, father and daughter begin to build a new relationship.
But can they maintain their false identities? Find out in this
preview screening; the film opens in the US in early December.
With Gur Bentvich, Elya Inbar and Tzahi Grad.

SHUFFLE
Directed
by Kurt Kuenne. USA, 2011, 82 min.
Lovell Milo is a young man on a mysterious, harrowing journey through disjointed
fragments of his life as he is transported to his past, present and
future. Part Twilight Zone-style mystery, part Frank Capra fantasy,
Shuffle stars TJ Thyne, co-star of the hit TV show Bones, as a man
who begins experiencing his life out of order; every day he wakes up
at a different age, on a different day of his life, never knowing
where or when he’s going to be once he falls asleep. He’s terrified
and wants it to stop – until he notices a pattern in his experience,
and works to uncover why this is happening to him – and what or who
is behind it. The film is both a captivating mystery and a
heart-rending love story, Shuffle is the mesmerizing story of Milo’s
redemption by the ghosts that guide his travel through the time
shuffled episodes of his life.
